Studio work

Below is a collection of studio art work from studio classes I have taken at Samford. They are important to show the range of mediums in which I can work, and further demonstrate compositional and design skills outside of computer design.

Samford University 2021 — Present

Drawing

Intermediate Drawing — Graphite still life

This assignment was the first done in Intermediate Drawing and was a way for the professor to asses our skills. He has us bring in 3 items from our dorms to set up personal still life’s. We were to complete these pieces in graphite.

Intermediate Drawing — NuPastel still life

This assignment was our final, in which we were to choose between colored pencil and pastel as our medium; I chose pastel. We were to create a symbolic still-life with a fabric and 3 objects. This piece was a symbol of anticipation.

Intermediate Drawing — NuPastel still life

This assignment was a color study introducing pastels. We were to include a found object and a piece of food. Once we had our objects, we were challenged to draw one item as close to its original color scheme as possible and then change the color of the other to something it would not occur as. The entirety of the piece should hold symbolism; in this case, it was a symbol and commentary of freshness.

Painting

Beginning Painting — Oil paint

For this assignment, we were to choose a plate of food to create a realism piece with. I decided to go with a plate of Christmas cookies to get in the spirit and to use as decor. We were challenged to use the color mixing and matching skills we worked on in the previous project to get as close to the colors of the objects as possible. We are also tasked with choosing to either use a glazing method or an underpainting; I decided to do an underpainting.

Mixed Media

Mixed Media — Metal box, Acrylic paint, Gold leaf, Paper, Thread, Fabric, Hot glue, Polaroid, Yarn.

For this assignment in Mixed Media, we were given a box in which we were to experiment with the idea of compartmentalization. I decided to explore the idea of compartmentalizing trust. The outside is bright, colorful, and shiny to come across as if nothing is wrong and represents child-like trust. The inside in contrast is dark and torn to show broken trust and the feeling of someone breaking it. There is a collection of letters I wrote to ex-friends, destroyed polaroid images, and torn friendship bracelets. The two key symbols in the inside of the box is the squeezed hearts puppets which show manipulation and the trapped feeling of it. Finally, there is a broken mirror made from silver leaf to show the broken idea of yourself that you are left with when your trust is broken.
